Chapter Thirteen - Meeting with Lana

Lana actively investigated Dennis Baker and the circumstances surrounding his life, death, and the investigation. She met with Ruby the following Monday afternoon to brief her on what she and her colleagues dug up. Apparently, Baker had some skeletons...maybe even literally...in his closet. In addition, to an on-going cocaine habit that no one acknowledged but everyone seemed to know about, he had a penchant for chasing boys. Prior to being elected as a state representative, Baker had been employed as a mathematics teacher and football coach at one of the high schools. After several years as a football coach, some unsubstantiated rumors led him to resigning from his coaching responsibilities. A gesture to restore comfort levels in the community. Also, one of Lana's colleagues in the London area indicated that Baker's supplier had good reason to believe his customer might have been connected indirectly to some of the human trafficking kingpins in the area. Apparently, there had been several mysterious disappearances of teenage boys from the area. No bodies were ever found, and local police chalked it up to runaway situations and/or drug involvement. Furthermore, Lana discovered that the investigation basically followed dead ends. Until the match with Ruby's DNA. She was apparently the only person of interest, and the state police had not identified any suspect in the case.

Ruby and Lana spent an hour going over possible questions Ruby might be asked during the interview with the State Police. The lawyer coached her on what to say, what not to say, and various ways to effectively answer questions with questions. Naivety was to be an important quality for Ruby to portray in a believable manner. Ruby assured her lawyer that was not going to be difficult, as she really did feel quite naive about the whole situation.

Jonah had not been included in the meeting, as his presence at the interview was to be in the role as Ruby's guardian. Lana wanted to keep his knowledge to a minimum. She suspected that if the Commonwealth Attorney decided to take the information to the Grand Jury, Jonah was most likely to be summoned as a witness. She wanted him to be able to legitimately answer any questions.

"So how has it been going at home with Derek?" Lana asked her. "Does he suspect anything?"

"Actually, no," Ruby replied. "He has been really busy with school. Papers and exams. Then at work, one of his kitchen people had surgery, so he has been busy in the kitchen in addition to regular duties. By the time he gets home, he is exhausted."

"Well, that's good. Maybe we can get through this without raising many flags." Lana twirled her pen with her fingers.

"Lana, when this is all over...hopefully it will be all over, will I then be able to tell Derek?" Ruby asked. "I'm worried he might hear it some other way."

"If you were an adult, the news media would be eating this story up and following you like a pariah. But,
